NOise VACANCY is a conceptual sound art project executed by Tairāwhiti artists and musicians. The project recognises the growing number of vacant spaces in our city centre and the social impact of this. It gives a voice to the whakapapa of these spaces and invites the community to engage in a sensory experience that examines the relationship between sound, art, space and people.
Driven by a curatorial team of Katy Wallace, Nikki O'Connor, Sarah Cleave, and Lina Marsh, each iteration challenges the format of the last. The project aspires to activate the local community, inspiring many to take the leap to participate.
The images here are just the tip of the iceberg of the dozens of artworks, installations and performances that have occured under the NOise Vacancy banner.
